Posted on February 17, 2021 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

Annnnnd we’re almost done!

Y

Today is “Y” day! Had yogurt for breakfast and then learned why leaves 🍁 turn colors in the fall and what makes them yellow (carotenoids). We took a walk and identified different types of deciduous trees and collected 🍂 to make fall wreathes. Making the wreaths was really fun!

Drink of the day – Yellowtail Chardonnay.

Z

Our final day is “Z”! We watched videos about zebras, learned about Zimbabwe, and discovered what zoologist do. We learned about all the bones in the hand and then made “Zombie X-ray hands” by tracing our hands, cutting them out and then gluing on Q-Tips. Finally we went back through the alphabet and thought about our favorite letters and what we learned.

Drinks of the day – Zombie!

Homeschooling S, T and U

Posted on February 3, 2021 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

Hello again and thanks for following along! This week we’re covering S, T and U!

S

Today was “S” day. Ate sausage and scrambled eggs 🥚, did subtraction, spelling and sight words, practiced our Spanish (counting, colors and household objects) and found a snake on our hike through the swamp.

Drink of the day – Sangria!

T

“T” day! Ate toast, explored tectonics 🏔 and the parts of the body that start with T (like teeth and tongue 👅). Learned about Japanese 🇯🇵 printmaker Hiroyuki Tajima and used his work as inspiration for our art. 🖼 We also watched civil rights Brain Pop videos and talked about equity, racism and MLK. None of that starts with T, but conversations about justice and equality can’t wait. Going to work on telling time ⏰ later this afternoon.

Drink of the day – Tequila!

U

“U” day was tough, so we went with an Under the Sea 🌊 theme. We learned about urchins & watched videos about sea creatures. Then we made sea animals out of modeling clay & colored a seascape. And the usual sight & spelling words, etc.

Drink of the day – Undercover Mink!

Sea cucumber, plankton, jellyfish and sea star.

See you next week for V, W and X!

Homeschooling P, Q and R

Posted on January 27, 2021 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

This weeks letters are P, Q and R!

Piles of pancakes!

P

Today’s letter is “P”. For breakfast we had piles of pancakes 🥞 with bananas and chocolate chips and then spent some time learned about Peru. We watched some videos about Peruvian culture, explored the Peruvian Andes on the map and read a story about Machu Picchu. For our art lesson we learned about the cubism of Pablo Picasso and then drew pictures 🖼 using Picasso as inspiration. After art we read some Beatrix Potter 🐰. Then we did our usual spelling, sight words, math, etc. They’ve also been doing Kodable, which is teaching them how to write computer codes.

Drink of the day – Pumpkin Porter.

Q

Today is a “Q” day. We took a spelling quiz and they got piggy banks as a reward for getting their 💯 . Well, once you have a piggy bank you need something to put in it, so we learned about the value of quarters (and nickels, dimes and pennies) and then we practiced counting coins. Whenever they correctly named the change and the amount they go to put the 💰 in their 🐷 bank. They were very excited about this particular lesson!

Drink of the day – QUARANTINI!

R

“R” day! Today we had Rice Krispies and red apples for breakfast. Then we went exploring in the backyard and found rosemary, rose bushes, and red spider plants. All plants that start with R! They liked learning about the different parts of the plants and how they can identified. They were also very impressed that rosemary can be used as a spice! Finally, we did math and spelling and then went exploring in the woods with Nana and Papa. 🌲

Drink of the day – Red wine 🍷.

Stayed tuned for S, T and U!

Homeschooling M, N and O

Posted on January 18, 2021 by Wendy Posted in Homeschool, Uncategorized .

Hi there! This week we’re working on M, N and O!

M

Today is M day!!!! The best day! We ate Mini Wheats and got 💯 on spelling & sight word tests so they got mineral sets!! First, we spent some time examining the minerals and deciding what properties we thought might be important. Then we learned about Mohs hardness scale, which is how the hardness of minerals is classified (talc is the softest at 1, and diamond is the hardest at 10) and also explored other mineral properties like streak color and shape (habit). The mineral sets came with lots of tools for experimenting with the minerals, like a nail, a streak plate and a magnifying glass. What’s a streak plate? It’s a small ceramic tile that you scratch minerals across. Many specimens will leave a distinctive color streak behind, which we can use to help ID the mineral!

We also learned how to count money. 💰 We’re starting with just identifying the coins and their values and soon we’ll work on adding up the value of the coins.

Day of the day – MARGARITA!!!!!

N

Today was “N”. We had Noosa yogurt for breakfast, learned about Narwhals, put together a US map & found all the states that start with N (there are 8 – can you name them without looking it up?). Then we did spelling & sight words, skip counting and workbook exercises doing adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.

Drink of the day – Negroni!

O

It’s “O” day! We started our day with oatmeal and OJ and then learned about owls – how they hunt, special things about their wings, and identifying them by the calls that they make. We also watched videos about the amazing octopus, master of disguise. For art today we looked at paintings by Georgia O’Keefe. We saw how her work evolved with time and talked about the way that she drew her pictures and the colors that she used. Then we did watercolor drawings 🖼 using O’Keefe’s paintings as inspiration. And of course spelling & sight words and Dreambox blah blah.

Drink of the day – Old Fashioned.

See you next week for P, Q and R!

Homeschooling G, H and I

Posted on January 6, 2021 by Wendy Posted in Homeschool, Uncategorized .

Today we’ll talk about using the letters G, H and I to guide our homeschooling activities!

G

Today’s letter is “G”. We had green apples for breakfast (they passed on the Greek yogurt), looked at the globe and learned about glaciers and GPS in Greenland. Here’s a great video from UNAVCO that I narrated about how we use GPS to study glaciers. We also talked about geology (plate tectonics), and watched some cool videos from IRIS about the history of plate tectonics and the different types of plate boundaries. And of course we did our spelling words and Sight Words and worked on our ABC Mouse assessments.

Drink of the day – Gin and Tonic!

Drawing showing geology (fossils under the ground and things “getting ready to die and become more fossils”.

H

Today’s letter is “H”. We ate Honeynut Cheerios and Honey Bunches of Oats for breakfast, and learned about hotspots and Hawaii. We watched this short video and then drew the basic “plumbing” of a volcanic island. We got 💯 on our spelling tests and practiced skip counting by 5’s and 10’s on the trampoline.

Drink of the day – Hurricane!

I

Today is “I” day. Ate instant oatmeal and ice water, learned about Iceland and found it on the world map and the globe, found all the states that start with I on the US map (Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Idaho), did spelling and sight words, made cards for their aunts birthday (and also kind of Halloween?) and played ABC Mouse and Dreambox. One kid is already sneaking magazines during class.

Drink of the day – Irish coffee!

Stay tuned for J, K and L, and to start at the beginning of the alphabet go here!

Homeschooling D, E and F

Posted on December 30, 2020 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

Welcome back! This week we’re going through D, E and F.

D

Today’s letter was D! We talked about foods that make up a healthy diet and then made (mostly) healthy cranberry orange muffins, which we called dessert for breakfast. We read “Danny and the Dinosaur” and wrote down the names of all of the animals that we could think of that start with “D”, like duck, dinosaur and dog. Then we drew pictures of them. After that we did Dreambox, < =>, and practiced vertical addition.

Drink of the day – Daquiri!

E

Today is “E” day. We had Eggos and scrambled eggs, wrote cards to our dearly departed cat Ella, watched some videos about elephants, did the ABC Mouse assessment and practiced our spelling and sight words.

Drink of the day – Elderflower cocktails!

F

Today’s letter was “F”. We had fresh fruit, learned about France, practiced counting to 10 in French, then did handwriting, spelling, sight words and math. I have not yet uttered a certain “F” word, so I’m calling today a win (so far).

Drink of the day – Frozen margarita!

Stay tuned for G, H and I!

Homeschooling

Posted on September 13, 2020 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

In this post I’m going to outline our basic plan for 1st grade homeschooling, share our weekly schedule and give links to the resources I’m using.

I also want to start by saying that the educators in our school district are AMAZING. AND they have been asked to do the impossible. The school schedule for our 1st graders was mandatory online instruction from 8 – 11:15 with 2 short breaks, and then online again from 12:15 – 2:30 (no breaks). What teacher could possible hold the attention of 21 six year olds for 5 hours a day? We gave it a shot for a few days but in the end it was just too much – too much yelling (me), too much crying (them and me), too much stress (everyone). Plus, my husband and I work full time and making sure the boys were sitting, paying attention, minding their mics, keeping their pants on, participating, and using the right website or app (of which there were many) was a second full-time job. After a lot of reflection and tears I called up close friend who homeschools her 3 boys and asked for help, which she delivered. What would we do without our friends?!?! (Thanks Michelle!) Anyway, I’m hoping to document some of our journey here, for those of you who may find yourselves in the same boat.

Here’s the basic plan. We’re focusing on reading, writing and math. We try and do some art a few times a week, incorporating it in to the lessons. We do quite a bit of science type stuff anyway (that’s kind of my jam) and we have some fun puzzles and map games to cover social studies / geography. I’ll provide links below to some of the resources we’re using, as well as an example of our schooling schedule.

Math

For math we’re using Dreambox, an online web tool, which is what the kids used at school. We had to get new accounts since their school account won’t transfer to a personal account. They like it because it seems like games, and they can earn coins to play in the arcade. The instructions are verbal so I don’t have to hang over them to tell them what to do. I like it because it shows me how much time they’ve spent learning, what concepts they’ve mastered and what concepts they’re struggling with.

Dreambox Parent Center

We’re also using workbooks (below) as well as flashcards.

Writing

I’ve gotten several workbooks to help with reading, writing and math. So far I really like the Big 1st Grade Workbooks (and this one). We also have the Kumon 1st grade complete set but haven’t used them yet as they arrived yesterday. Every day we do 2 or 3 pages in Printing Without Tears and we haven’t had tears yet so it seems to be living up to its name! I also got white boards they can use on their laps, and that’s what we use when we practice our spelling words.

Big 1st Grade Workbook

Reading

We discovered these Bob books at the library last year and the kids really took to them, but since we’re trying to stay home as much as possible I went ahead and got the complete set so we don’t have to go to the library. We’ve also been practicing reading using these First Little Reader book sets and the Marvel, Meet the SuperHeros books. We also have several books on Phonics, like this one.

Sight Word Bingo

Other

I also have been collecting games and puzzles for things like science and social studies. We just finished doing this World Map Puzzle. We used to pull this US States puzzle map out every time we were going somewhere, back when that was a thing people did. We also have a puzzle of the human body, Sight Words Bingo, Telling Time Game, and Silly Sentences. We also have this awesome microscope that my parents got them for their birthday. We recently got a trampoline at the advice of my friend, and it’s been amazingly helpful for practicing things like skip counting. They jump as they count which gives it rhythm and keeps them busy. Then they have contests to see who can count the highest without messing up.

World Map Puzzle

Weekly Schedule

I looked at what they need to know going in to 2nd grade, along with a different resources in the educational literature and the resources sent to me by my friend showing what she did for her kids in 1st grade and came up with weekly schedules for Phonics and Math until the end of January. These are super loose and likely to change but it’s helped me to think through what I want them to learn based on what they need to know going in to 2nd grade (which will hopefully be back in the classroom). Keep in mind that I am not an elementary educator – that is a specialized field of study, knowledge and expertise – but this is just something to help me think through our learning path. I’m planning on doing some testing around Christmas to see what skills they need to learn and then planning out the rest of the school year, which will likely include things like short book reports, reading comprehension, multiplication, etc.

A day in the life

Just to give you an idea of what our days look like, I’ll run you through last Friday. We’ve been having a “Letter of the Day”, and the letter of the day on Friday was “C”. So we had Cheerios for breakfast (I had coffee, also “C”), wrote “Cc” on paper bags and went around the house looking for objects that start with “C” and then drew Crazy Cats. We watched a video about cats, and then learned about coronaviruses. We did a spelling test of the words we had practiced all week (rat, hat, mat, sat, fat and got them all correct!), did 3 pages in the “Printing Without Tears” book and then did 30 minutes of Dreambox. This took about 2 hours, give or take.

Coffee and Crazy Cats

Not having to pay for childcare for the last 6 months has left our energy depleted but our bank accounts a bit fuller than usual, so we’ve been able to hire a tutor to come a few times a week. She came on Friday afternoon and they used popsicle sticks and jewels to practice adding and subtracting by 5’s. They did a few math worksheets, focused on adding and subtracting numbers greater than 10 and practiced letter sounds. Then she read some books to them and had them read some books to her (see books above). Then they did the human body puzzle and practiced the names of some of the bones (femur, tibia, fibula, etc.).

Hope these resources are helpful and I’ll update as time and energy allow. Take good care, friends!

Infertility, the silent struggle

Posted on March 14, 2019 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

I did a thing that scares me. I co-wrote an Op-Ed with other women from 500 Women Scientist about infertility.

See, my sons are the result of multiple rounds of different types of fertility treatments. During the process I told almost no one; it was an incredibly painful time and a very difficult journey. I was scared and ashamed and I felt like a failure for not being able to conceive. Even now, more than 5 years later, the memories have sharp edges; I cried almost the whole time I worked on the piece.

1 in 6 couples experiences fertility issues. Someone that you know (besides me) has struggled to build a family, and they probably did it quietly and alone because of the stigma and shame associated with infertility. Enough.

If you are struggling with infertility you are not alone. You are not a failure. You have no reason to be ashamed.

Here’s the piece. Please read and share; you never know who may need it.

Babies don’t keep

Posted on October 26, 2016 by Wendy Posted in Uncategorized .

Babies don't keep

Babies don’t keep

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my babies and babies don’t keep.
